Power fades twice as fast as strength
Strength is how much you can lift. Power is whether you catch the kid coming off the couch — and it leaves first.

01What's the difference between strength and power?
Strength is force; power is force on a clock — and the emergencies life schedules are timed events, not slow grinds.
Strength is force. Power is force times speed — the same muscle, on a clock. Most of what the gym measures is strength; most of what life springs on you is power. The toddler tipping backwards off the couch is not a 5-second grind — it's caught inside half a second or not at all. So is the curb you clip: the stumble is a physics problem, and the recovery step that keeps you off the pavement is a power output.
The two travel together but they are not the same account, and with age they drain at different speeds. How fast muscle itself goes after 40 is its own story; this one is about the speed layer on top of it.
02How fast does power decline with age?
Leg power falls about 3.5% a year between 65 and 89, roughly double strength's 1–2% — and and in arm data both slopes start by age 40 [2].
In 100 healthy adults aged 65–89, isometric strength differences across the age range worked out to losses of 1–2% per year — while leg extensor power fell at roughly 3.5% per year [1]. Nearly twice the rate at the strength range's top end, three and a half times at the bottom. In the men, power fell significantly faster than knee extensor strength; in women the gap was narrower [1].
And it starts early. In the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, arm strength and power were both declining by age 40 in men and women [2] — with the loss of power outpacing the loss of strength in men. The fade you'd file under “getting older” at 70 is a slope you stepped onto in your 30s.

03Why does power matter more at 70?
Low power tracks with 2–3× the mobility-impairment risk of low strength, because the tasks that end independence are timed [3].

The same review notes that older adults who could move a leg press faster performed better on the balance measures associated with falling [3]. The so-called dad reflex is not a personality trait. It's watts — and watts are the thing on the steepest discount curve. Getting off the floor without your hands is the same physics in a living-room test.
04Can you rebuild power after 35?
Trials in adults 50 and older rebuilt power — about 55 watts on average — and fast reps roughly tripled the effect of slow ones [4].
Yes, and the trials say how. A meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials in adults 50 and older found resistance training added lower-body power — about 55 watts on average [4]. The moderator that mattered most was speed: high-velocity training, where the lifting half of each rep is done fast on purpose, roughly tripled the effect of traditional lifting (effect 0.62 vs 0.20) [4].
The dose is friendlier than it sounds. The NSCA's position statement on training for older adults recommends power work at moderate loads — 40–60% of max — moved fast in the lifting phase, and notes that in older women, both 1 and 3 sets over 12 weeks improved strength [5]. Power training is not an add-on for athletes. It's a rep-speed decision inside the sessions you already do.

05What does safe power training look like?
Moderate loads moved fast, sets ending while reps are still crisp — two sessions a week puts you on the right side of the trials [4][5].
Fast intent, submaximal loads, full recovery, and sets that end while the reps are still crisp — power work stops before fatigue, not at failure [5]. That makes it, counterintuitively, some of the least grinding training in the week. Start with fast lifts; add low jumps and throws when landings are quiet and joints are ready.
Two sessions a week of one or two of these slots is enough to be on the right side of the trials [4][5]. The barbell will forgive decades of neglect. The half-second catch won't.
